SNAP Free Phone: use your food stamps to qualify
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP / food stamps).
Quick answer
Does SNAP qualify me for a free phone?
Yes. If you or anyone in your household receives SNAP (food stamps), you automatically meet the Lifeline program rule. You can get a SNAP free phone and free monthly service from FreeCall Wireless. The National Verifier can often confirm SNAP instantly, so many applicants need no documents.
- SNAP qualifies automatically
- EBT card is not proof by itself
- Use your SNAP letter

Why does SNAP qualify you for Lifeline?
SNAP is one of the federal programs listed in the Lifeline rules. SNAP already checks your income and household, so the FCC lets SNAP households qualify for Lifeline without a separate income review. Your state may call SNAP by another name, such as CalFresh in California, Basic Food in Washington or FoodShare in Wisconsin. All of them count.
What proof of SNAP is accepted?
- A SNAP approval or benefit letter from your state agency, dated within the last 12 months
- A SNAP renewal notice or benefit statement showing your name
- A screenshot of your state benefits portal showing active SNAP and your name
Does it matter who in the household gets SNAP?
No. If anyone in your household receives SNAP, including a child or spouse, the household qualifies. The person applying must be an adult and must be part of the same household. If the SNAP case is in someone else's name, the proof should show that person and your shared address.
What if my SNAP ends?
If you stop receiving SNAP, you may still qualify through Medicaid, SSI or income. Tell us within 30 days if you no longer qualify. At your yearly recertification, you can qualify through a different program.

What is SNAP called in my state?
| State | SNAP program name |
|---|---|
| California | CalFresh |
| Washington | Basic Food |
| Wisconsin | FoodShare |
| North Carolina | Food and Nutrition Services |
| Arizona | Nutrition Assistance |
| Maryland and Delaware | Food Supplement Program |
| Vermont | 3SquaresVT |
All of these are SNAP and qualify you for Lifeline. See your state on States We Serve for its local program names.
What if I do not qualify through SNAP?
You have other options. Lifeline accepts several programs, and you only need one. If SNAP does not work for you, check Medicaid or SSI. You can also qualify by income if your household earns $21,546 a year or less for one person, $29,214 for two, or $44,550 for four in 2026. And if you live on qualifying Tribal lands, Tribal programs count too. The application lets you pick whichever option fits you best, and our team can help you choose at (918) 931-0991.
How long does approval take with SNAP?
When the National Verifier can match your SNAP record electronically, approval usually takes only a few minutes. If it cannot, upload a clear photo of your proof and a reviewer will check it, usually within one to three business days. Your free phone ships as soon as you are approved.
Frequently asked questions
Is EBT the same as SNAP?
EBT is the card used to deliver SNAP and some other benefits. SNAP is the program that qualifies you.
Can I qualify with SNAP if I also work?
Yes. If you receive SNAP, your income does not matter for Lifeline.
Do pandemic EBT or summer EBT qualify?
No. Only SNAP itself is a qualifying program.
Does SNAP in another state count?
Your SNAP benefit must be active. If you moved, use your current state's SNAP or qualify another way.
Will applying for Lifeline affect my SNAP?
No. Lifeline does not change your SNAP benefits.
