What is the difference between a VA pension and VA disability?

The VA pension is a needs-based benefit for wartime veterans with limited income who are 65 or older or have a permanent disability, and for their surviving spouses. VA disability compensation is paid for injuries or illnesses connected to service, regardless of income. Only the pension is on the Lifeline list, but disability compensation counts as income if you apply that way.

Phones that veterans often choose

Many veterans pick the iPhone 14 for Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via satellite, or the 4G flip phone for simplicity. Any Lifeline phone can reach the Veterans Crisis Line by dialing 988 and pressing 1.

What if I do not qualify through the Veterans Pension?

You have other options. Lifeline accepts several programs, and you only need one. If the Veterans Pension does not work for you, check SNAP, Medicaid or SSI. You can also qualify by income if your household earns $21,546 a year or less for one person, $29,214 for two, or $44,550 for four in 2026. And if you live on qualifying Tribal lands, Tribal programs count too. The application lets you pick whichever option fits you best, and our team can help you choose at (918) 931-0991.

How long does approval take with the Veterans Pension?

When the National Verifier can match your the Veterans Pension record electronically, approval usually takes only a few minutes. If it cannot, upload a clear photo of your proof and a reviewer will check it, usually within one to three business days. Your free phone ships as soon as you are approved.
