Free Phone: every legitimate way to get one

A simple guide to getting a free phone in 2026, whether you qualify for Lifeline, want to switch providers or already own a phone.

Quick answer

How can I get a free phone?

The most reliable way to get a free phone is the federal Lifeline program. If you receive SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, public housing aid or a Veterans Pension, or your income is at or below 135% of the poverty guidelines, FreeCall Wireless can send you a free phone with free monthly service. You can also get one by switching your Lifeline benefit to us.

What are the ways to get a free phone?

OptionWho it is forMonthly cost
Lifeline free phoneHouseholds on benefits or with low income$0
Free phone when you switchPeople who already have Lifeline elsewhere$0
Bring your own phoneAnyone with an unlocked phone who qualifies$0 + free SIM
Carrier promotionsPeople who pay for a monthly planUsually $30 to $80+

For most people reading this page, Lifeline is the best path because it removes the monthly bill too. A "free phone" from a carrier promotion still comes with a paid plan.

Who qualifies for a free phone?

Lifeline has three ways to qualify. You need only one:

  • You or someone in your household receives a qualifying federal benefit.
  • Your household income is at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines ($21,546 for one person, $44,550 for four in 2026).
  • You live on qualifying Tribal lands and take part in a Tribal program.

What do I need to apply?

Have your full name, date of birth, address and the last four digits of your Social Security number (or a Tribal ID) ready. If the National Verifier cannot confirm your benefit automatically, you will upload a photo of a benefit letter or income document. Our documents checklist shows what is accepted.

Is there a catch?

There are a few rules, and we want you to know them up front:

  • Only one Lifeline benefit per household.
  • You must use your phone at least once every 30 days (a call, text or data use counts).
  • You must recertify your eligibility once a year.
  • Some premium phones have a one-time co-pay; free phones never do.

That is it. No contract, no credit check and no monthly bill.
