Understanding coverage limitations

  • Coverage maps are estimates of outdoor coverage; indoor signal can be weaker
  • Hills, buildings, basements and metal roofs reduce signal
  • 5G requires a 5G phone and 5G coverage; phones use 4G LTE elsewhere
  • The FCC National Broadband Map shows each carrier's reported 4G and 5G coverage at any address

Does my phone work when I travel?

Yes. Your phone works anywhere on our nationwide network in the United States. International roaming is not included with Lifeline plans.

Why does coverage matter when choosing a Lifeline provider?

Every Lifeline provider receives the same federal support, but coverage depends on the network each one uses. A phone that cannot get signal at home or at work is not much help. That is why we encourage everyone to check coverage first and to tell us about any dead spots after they switch. If coverage truly does not work where you live, you can transfer your Lifeline benefit to another provider at any time.

Does weather or terrain affect signal?

Yes. Hills, valleys, thick walls, metal roofs and basements can weaken signal, and heavy storms can briefly affect service. Wi-Fi calling is the best fix indoors.

Will my free phone work for emergencies?

Yes. Every phone can call 911, and 911 calls can connect through any available network. You can also reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988. Keep your address up to date so emergency services can find you more easily.
