Quick answer

What does the Safe Connections Act let survivors do?

The Safe Connections Act lets survivors of domestic violence and related crimes separate their line, or the abuser's line, from a shared mobile account at no cost, keep their number, and receive emergency Lifeline support for up to six months. FreeCall Wireless processes complete requests within two business days, confidentially.

  • Keep your number
  • Confidential

What is the Safe Connections Act?

The Safe Connections Act of 2022 helps survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking, sexual assault, stalking and related crimes separate their mobile phone line from an account shared with an abuser, without losing their number or service. FCC rules require providers like FreeCall Wireless to honor these requests.

What can I request?

  • Separate your line (and the lines of people in your care) from a shared account
  • Separate the abuser's line from your account
  • Keep your phone number when your line is separated
  • Emergency Lifeline support for up to six months while you get back on your feet

What does line separation cost?

Nothing. There is no fee, penalty or charge to separate a line under the Safe Connections Act. After separation, you become responsible for your own line and can choose a Lifeline, prepaid or other plan.

What documentation is needed?

Provide one document that shows the abuse, such as a signed affidavit from a professional who has helped you (for example a social worker, shelter worker, attorney or health care provider), a police report, or a court order. You do not need to share details beyond what the document shows. The FCC checklist linked below lists what to include.

How long does it take?

We process a complete line separation request within two business days and tell you if anything is missing.

How is my information protected?

  • We use only the contact method you choose and never contact the abuser about your request
  • Your request and documents are kept confidential and used only to process the separation
  • We do not tell other account members why a line was separated
